User Scripts and Bookmarklets

Translate to over 80 languages (downloads by language) – the Facebook interface already supports many languages. This application translates the content itself (what you and your friends create and put into Facebook).

 

A bookmarklet is a browser bookmark that runs a script (instead of directing you to a web page). If you place it in your browser's toolbar then using it to translate the actual content you and your Facebook friends write (News Feed, Wall, Status Updates, Photos, Inbox, etc) is only one click away.

 

Here are some screenshots/instructions from another code project that show how to add a bookmarklet for the several popular browsers (Translatorize bookmarklets and user scripts are known to work in Firefox, IE and Safari. Other browsers not tested except for Chrome which is not yet compatible, at least not the current version of 2.0.172).

A user script is small program that installs into a browser add-on that you can use to manage and run custom scripts.

• Firefox - Use the "GreaseMonkey" add-on
• Safari (Mac) - Use the "GreaseKit" plug-in

The user script and the bookmarklet are almost identical in function. One difference though, is the user script can be set to auto-translate so that when you refresh a page or navigate to a location that requires a page load, the translation is initiated without having to click anything.

 

Translatorize utilizes the free, statistical machine translation service offered by Google called, Google Translate. Similar to when you submit a query to Google Search, you are sending data to Google Inc. to be handled according to their privacy policy and terms of service. Only use Translatorize if you trust Google with your data in this regard.

Note that none of your Facebook data is processed by translatorize.com itself.

With the bookmarklet or user script installed (if using the bookmarklet, click your bookmarklet which is now in your toolbar to initiate the translation). Here's a screenshot showing what happens (in this example, translating from the auto-detected original language to Spanish).
